“The Ministry of Ayush appreciates the initiative taken by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to develop standards and certification for Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) products and services. This effort by BIS is expected to enhance international trade by ensuring the quality of Ayush products, instilling confidence in manufacturers, and benefiting consumers in terms of cost reduction, improved performance, and enhanced safety.
BIS has notified 31 Indian standards related to Ayush, covering 30 herbs and 1 product (stainless steel neti pot). These standards were recently published through a gazette notification. Furthermore, BIS has established an additional department dedicated to Ayush, which will enable a focused approach in the standardization process.
In collaboration with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), BIS has also taken the initiative to formulate international standards for Ayush systems. A Working Group (WG–10) on ‘Traditional Medicine’ has been created within the ISO/TC-215 ‘Health Informatics’ based on the advice of BIS.
With the globalization and increasing usage of traditional systems of medicine, the need for national and international standards for Ayush has become crucial. The Ministry of Ayush has been consistently working to create a quality ecosystem that facilitates trade and ensures the availability of high-quality Ayush products and services both nationally and globally. The establishment of a dedicated department within BIS and the collaboration with ISO reflect the commitment to achieving these goals.”
